This article will discuss what latency is, how to adjust it and how to use it.

Latency is an advanced setting which you can adjust in your Foil Drive App for Gen2 Foil Drive systems. 

What is latency?

Latency is the time it takes for your motor to cut off when your controller loses signal with the box. 

Note: Latency is NOT when you release the trigger, there will be an instant motor cut off regardless of the latency setting.

What is Low and High Latency?

Low Latency is roughly around 100m/s which is a really quick cut off time. For example, if you fall in the water or lose connection with the box, the motor will cut off within 100 milliseconds. Low latency is perfect for those starting out, kids learning to use the Foil Drive, or when you're getting dialled in on new gear. 

High Latency has a much longer period of time before the motor cuts off once the controller has lost connection with the box. 

When is High Latency beneficial?

High Latency is beneficial if you are using a low volume board, or a full carbon board (carbon tends to block signal a little bit more than fibreglass boards). By using high latency, the occurrence of your motor dropping out when you haven't fallen off is going to be longer as the unit holds on to a longer period of time before cutting off. 

Note: High Latency is only recommended for those who have dialled in on their gear. The delayed motor shut off obviously poses more of a potential safety hazard and we only recommend this to be used once you are a competent rider.
