Throttle Mapping allows you to customise how much motor power is available when using your V3 Controller.
Whether you're looking for smoother low-speed manoeuvring, a more efficient cruising setup, or limiting power for beginner riders, Throttle Mapping lets you tailor the controller to suit your riding style.
How Throttle Mapping works depends on whether you're using Gear Mode or Trigger Mode.
Throttle Mapping in Gear Mode
In Gear Mode, each gear can be assigned its own maximum throttle percentage.
For example:

Why would I customise each gear?
Throttle Mapping allows each gear to serve a different purpose.
Gear 1 – Slow manoeuvring
Many riders choose a lower throttle setting (around 30%) for Gear 1.
This provides gentle, predictable thrust for:
- Launching from the beach
- Navigating shallow water
- Manoeuvring around rocks or sandbars
- Low-speed positioning
Gears 2–4 – Efficient cruising
Many experienced riders configure Gears 2, 3 and 4 only a few percentage points apart.
For example:
- Gear 2 – 65%
- Gear 3 – 68%
- Gear 4 – 74%
This creates several comfortable cruising speeds without large jumps in power.
It also helps maintain a more consistent riding feel as the battery discharges throughout your session.
As battery voltage gradually decreases, slightly increasing gears allows you to maintain similar thrust without needing large throttle changes.
Gear 5 – Maximum cruising power
Many riders reserve Gear 5 for situations where they want higher sustained power without using Boost.
Typical uses include:
- Covering distance quickly
- Travelling to the next wave
- Returning to the lineup
- Riding in stronger currents
Boost remains available whenever an extra burst of power is required.
Using Boost with Gear Mode
Throttle Mapping does not replace Boost.
Even if you're riding in Gear Mode, Boost remains available whenever you need maximum power for a short period.
For example:
- Accelerating onto a wave
- Climbing over a swell
- Escaping whitewater
- Quick bursts of acceleration
Throttle Mapping in Trigger Mode
When using Trigger Mode, Throttle Mapping works differently.
Instead of configuring individual gears, you set a single maximum throttle limit for the entire trigger range.
For example:
Setting the throttle limit to 48% means:
- Full trigger pull delivers only 48% throttle.
- The controller will never exceed this value.
This is useful when limiting available power.
Why would I limit maximum throttle?
Throttle limiting is ideal when:
- Teaching new riders
- Young riders are using the system
- You want smoother throttle control
- You want to reduce available power
By limiting maximum throttle, the controller becomes easier to manage while still retaining the full trigger travel for smooth throttle control.
What happens to Boost when throttle is limited?
When Trigger Mode is limited below 100%, Boost is automatically disabled.
This is intentional.
If you've chosen to restrict the maximum available throttle, the controller assumes you don't want the rider accessing full motor power via Boost.
I want reduced throttle but still want Boost
If you need lower cruising power while still keeping access to Boost, Foil Drive recommends using Gear Mode instead of Trigger Mode.
Configure each gear to your preferred throttle limits while leaving Boost available whenever extra power is required.
Which mode should I choose?
Choose Gear Mode if you want:
- Multiple customised power levels.

Does limiting throttle damage performance?
No.
Throttle Mapping simply limits the maximum throttle available to the rider.
The system continues to operate normally within that selected range.
Why doesn't Boost work anymore?
If you're using Trigger Mode with a throttle limit below 100%, Boost is automatically disabled.
This is normal behaviour.
If you need Boost while using reduced cruising power, use Gear Mode instead.
What's the best Throttle Mapping setup?
There is no single "best" setup.
Your ideal throttle mapping depends on:
