Understanding the Tilt SensorUpdated 5 hours ago

The Tilt Sensor is a built-in safety feature designed to stop the motor if your Foil Drive detects the board has rolled or pitched beyond the limits you've configured.

If your motor won't start and your controller displays LOCK, the Tilt Sensor may simply be doing its job.

What does the Tilt Sensor do?

The Tilt Sensor continuously monitors your Foil Drive's orientation.

If the board rolls or pitches beyond the allowable angle, the motor immediately stops.

This helps prevent the motor from unexpectedly powering while the board is upside down or in an unsafe position after a fall.

Once the board returns within the permitted angle, the system can be rearmed.

Why is my controller showing "LOCK"?

If the Tilt Sensor has activated, the controller will display LOCK and throttle will be disabled.

This is normal behaviour and indicates the safety feature has been triggered.

Common reasons include:

  • The board is upside down.
  • The board is on its side.
  • The board has rolled after a fall.
  • The board has pitched beyond the configured limit.

Why won't my motor unlock when I hold the B button?

This usually means the Tilt Sensor is causing the lock—not Throttle Lock.

Holding the B button only unlocks the controller when the board is already within the permitted tilt range.

If the board is still outside the configured pitch or roll limits, pressing the B button will not unlock the controller.

First return the board to a normal riding position.

My board is level again, but the motor still won't run

If you were holding the throttle when the Tilt Sensor activated, the controller requires the throttle to return completely to zero before the motor can restart.

To resume riding:

  1. Return the board to a normal riding position.
  2. Fully release the throttle.
  3. Allow the trigger to return to zero.
  4. Apply throttle again.

This prevents the motor from unexpectedly restarting if the trigger is still being held after a fall.

Why do I have to release the throttle?

This is an intentional safety feature.

If the motor restarted while the trigger was still held after the board returned upright, unexpected acceleration could occur.

Requiring the throttle to return to zero ensures the rider intentionally commands the motor to start again.

How do I turn the Tilt Sensor on or off?

The V3 Controller only allows you to enable or disable the Tilt Sensor.

It does not change the tilt angles.

The actual pitch and roll limits are configured separately in the Foil Drive App.

How do I change the Tilt Sensor sensitivity?

Tilt sensitivity is not adjusted on the controller.

To change how far the board can roll or pitch before the motor stops, use the Foil Drive App.

You can customise the allowable angles to suit your riding style and conditions.

Should I turn the Tilt Sensor off?

Most riders should leave the Tilt Sensor enabled.

However, there may be situations where experienced riders temporarily disable it.

For example:

  • Downwind foiling in large ocean swell.
  • Riding in conditions where the board frequently exceeds the configured tilt angle during normal use.
  • Testing or specialised riding situations.

If the Tilt Sensor repeatedly activates during normal riding, consider adjusting the tilt limits in the Foil Drive App rather than immediately disabling the feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

My motor stopped after I fell off. Is something wrong?

Probably not.

The Tilt Sensor has likely detected the board exceeded its permitted angle and has stopped the motor as designed.

Return the board to a normal riding position, release the throttle completely, then apply throttle again.

Why won't the B button unlock the controller?

If the Tilt Sensor is active, the board is still outside the permitted pitch or roll angle.

The controller cannot be unlocked until the board returns within the configured tilt limits.

Does the controller set the Tilt Sensor angles?

No.

The V3 Controller only turns the Tilt Sensor on or off.

All pitch and roll angle settings are configured in the Foil Drive App.

Can I disable the Tilt Sensor?

Yes.

The V3 Controller allows you to turn the Tilt Sensor on or off.

Foil Drive recommends leaving it enabled unless you understand the safety implications and have a specific reason to disable it.

Best Practice

The Tilt Sensor is designed to improve rider safety—not to interrupt your session.

If it activates unexpectedly:

  • Check the board has returned to a normal riding position.
  • Fully release the throttle before trying again.
  • Adjust the tilt limits in the Foil Drive App if they are too sensitive for your riding style.
  • Leave the Tilt Sensor enabled whenever practical to maintain its safety benefits.
