Boost Mode allows your Foil Drive system to temporarily provide additional power above the normal 100% throttle output during take-off.
Boost Mode is available on Gen2 and Gen2.5 Foil Drive systems and can be adjusted through the Foil Drive App.
Depending on your Foil Drive system and battery combination, Boost can be adjusted from 1% up to 24%, or switched OFF.
What is Boost Mode?
Boost Mode provides additional power on top of full throttle to help generate extra thrust during take-off.
For example, if Boost is set to 20%, the system can provide up to 120% of normal full-throttle power while Boost is active.
Boost is particularly useful when you need extra thrust to get up and riding, such as with:
- Heavier riders
- Smaller boards
- Smaller or higher-performance foils
- Flat-water conditions
- Low-wind conditions
- Low or weak surf
- Situations where additional take-off thrust is helpful
Boost is not required for normal riding. It is an optional feature that provides additional thrust when you need it.
How Much Boost Can I Use?
The maximum Boost available depends on the Foil Drive system and battery combination.
Some combinations allow up to 24% additional Boost, providing up to 124% of normal full-throttle power.
The Foil Drive App will only allow Boost settings that are supported by your connected system and battery.
Boost Duration
The Foil Drive App also allows you to adjust how long Boost is available during a take-off.
Depending on the system, Boost can be programmed for up to 22 seconds.
You can choose a shorter Boost period if you only want additional power for the initial part of your take-off.
Factory Boost Setting
Boost is programmed with a default setting from the factory.
The default setting may vary depending on the system, battery and software version.
Always check the Boost setting displayed in the Foil Drive App rather than assuming a particular Boost percentage or duration.
How Do I Adjust Boost Mode?
Boost Mode is adjusted during the Foil Drive system programming process in the Foil Drive App.
- Connect your Foil Drive system to the Foil Drive App.
- Select Set Up / Reprogram Foil Drive.
- Select your desired Power Mode.
- Adjust the Boost Mode setting.
- Select your desired Boost percentage, or switch Boost OFF.
- Adjust the Boost duration if this option is available for your system.
- Review all settings.
Select Save and wait for the app to display Ready to Fly.
Always review your Boost setting before saving your Foil Drive configuration. Do not assume your previous Boost setting has been retained when reprogramming the system.
How Do I Activate Boost?
Boost is automatically available when the system detects the required throttle position.
To activate Boost during take-off:
- Pull the throttle trigger past approximately 95% throttle.
- Boost will activate and provide the additional programmed power.
- Continue using the throttle normally during the Boost period.
If you release the throttle during the Boost period, Boost will deactivate and the system will return to normal throttle operation.
To activate Boost again, the system must first meet its reactivation conditions before Boost can be triggered again.
Boost Re-Activation
Boost cannot be repeatedly activated without allowing the system time to reduce heat and load.
After Boost has been used, the throttle must be reduced below the required threshold for the required period before Boost can be activated again.
These limits are built into the system to help manage heat and protect the Foil Drive components. Do not attempt to bypass or modify these protections.
Boost and Battery Runtime
Using Boost increases the power drawn from the battery.
Higher Boost settings can therefore:
- Reduce overall battery runtime
- Increase battery load
- Increase battery degradation over time
You do not need to use the maximum available Boost. For the best balance between performance and battery runtime, use only as much Boost as you need.
Boost at Lower Battery Charge
As the battery charge decreases, battery voltage also decreases.
Under high loads, such as maximum throttle with Boost active, you may notice voltage sag. This means the maximum thrust available later in the battery's discharge may be slightly lower than when the battery was fully charged.
This is normal battery behaviour.
Choosing the Right Boost Setting
More Boost is not necessarily better.
Consider starting with a lower Boost setting and increasing it only if you need additional take-off thrust.
For example:
- Larger foil / lighter rider: Less Boost may be required.
- Smaller foil / heavier rider: More Boost may be useful.
- Easy conditions: Lower Boost can help conserve battery.
- Difficult take-off conditions: Higher Boost may provide the additional thrust needed.
Boost is an optional performance feature. Use the lowest setting that provides the take-off performance you need.
