Power or Performance Loss & Motor VibrationsUpdated 5 hours ago

Although uncommon, there are a few things to check if your Foil Drive motor is not running smoothly, is causing vibrations through the board, making unusual noises or is louder than usual, or you are experiencing a loss of power.

Follow the troubleshooting steps below to identify the cause and resolve the issue.

Symptoms

This guide applies if your motor:

  • Feels like it is vibrating
  • Does not run smoothly
  • Has reduced power or thrust
  • Makes unusual noises or sounds louder than usual
  • Feels unbalanced while running

Recently Installed a Three-Blade Upgrade or Replaced a Single Propeller?

If you have recently:

  • Installed the three-blade propeller upgrade, or
  • Replaced a single damaged propeller blade

and you are now experiencing vibrations or reduced smoothness; the issue may be caused by a slight difference in propeller weight.

Even small variations in propeller weight can affect motor balance and create vibration.

Propeller Balance Check

To balance the propeller setup:

  1. Remove two propeller blades from the three-blade hub.
  2. Swap the position of these two blades.
  3. Mark the two swapped blades with a small mark so you can identify them.
  4. Reinstall the propellers and test the motor.

If the vibration continues:

  1. Remove the remaining original blade and one of the marked blades.
  2. Rotate their positions on the hub.
  3. Reinstall and test again.

Continue rotating the blade positions until the smoothest running combination is found.

Note: If the vibration remains after trying different propeller positions, continue with the troubleshooting steps below to inspect the propeller, motor, bearings, and rotor shaft.

Step 1 – Check Propeller Blades and Hub

Propeller blades that cannot fold freely can cause the motor to become unbalanced, resulting in vibrations and reduced performance.

Check Propeller Blade Movement

With the battery removed and the controller switched off:

  1. Rotate the motor by hand.
  2. Check that the propeller blades can move freely.
  3. The blades should be able to "flop" open and closed without resistance.

If the blades are stiff or unable to move freely, inspect the following:

Check Propeller Bolts

Ensure the bolts securing the propeller blades are:

  • Not bent
  • Not damaged
  • Not secured too tightly
  • Not too loose

The bolt heads should be fully seated into the propeller hub.

Incorrect bolt tension can prevent the blades from folding correctly and cause motor imbalance.

Check Propeller Blades for Damage

Inspect the propeller blades for:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Nicks

Even small damage to a propeller blade edge can affect motor balance and cause a loss of power or thrust.

Note: If a blade has previously been sanded or reshaped after damage, this may also alter performance.

Check for Debris

Inspect the propeller blades and hub for debris such as:

  • Sand
  • Shell fragments
  • Fishing line
  • Other foreign objects

Debris can prevent the blades from opening and folding correctly.

Remove any debris and test the system again.

Step 2 – Check Stator and Rotor Cleanliness

Debris trapped between the stator and rotor can cause:

  • Increased friction
  • Vibrations
  • Reduced motor performance
  • Wear or damage to motor components

Inspect the Motor

Ensure the stator and rotor are:

  • Clean
  • Free from sand
  • Free from grit
  • Free from salt crystals
  • Free from debris

During use, debris such as sand, shells, and fishing line can be pulled inside the motor.

It is important to clean your motor thoroughly after every session to prevent damage caused by debris between the stator and rotor.

Cleaning the Motor

  1. Flush the motor thoroughly with fresh water.
  2. Remove any visible debris.
  3. Allow the motor to drain.
  4. Test the system.

If the issue continues, continue to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check Stator Bearings

Damaged or worn bearings can cause:

  • Motor vibrations
  • Rough operation
  • Reduced performance
  • Excessive movement

Inspect the Bearings

Check that:

  • Bearings are securely attached to the stator
  • Bearings are not damaged
  • Bearings rotate smoothly
  • The inner race of the bearing does not have excessive movement or play

If Bearings Are Damaged

If the bearings are:

  • Worn
  • Damaged
  • Loose
  • Showing excessive movement

They will need to be replaced.

Step 4 – Check Rotor Shaft Movement

A damaged rotor shaft can cause:

  • Vibrations
  • Reduced motor performance
  • Unusual movement while operating

Inspect the Rotor Shaft

Check for:

  • Side-to-side movement (lateral movement)
  • Up-and-down movement (vertical movement)

The rotor shaft should not have any noticeable movement.

If the Rotor Shaft Has Movement

If the shaft has any lateral or vertical movement, the rotor will need to be replaced.

Replacement Options

Damage Caused by Accident or Misuse

If the damage occurred due to:

  • A crash or stack
  • Impact
  • Incorrect use
  • Accidental damage

A replacement rotor can be purchased through the Foil Drive website or your local Foil Drive dealer.

Suspected Manufacturing Fault

If you believe the fault occurred during normal use, submit a warranty claim for assessment.

Warranty Claim Requirements:

Please include:

  • Foil Drive serial number
  • Proof of purchase
  • Photos of the motor and affected components
  • Video showing the vibration or power loss
  • Description of the issue

Providing complete information helps our Support team diagnose the issue faster.

Integrated Mast Systems – Additional Checks

If you are using an integrated mast system, complete all troubleshooting steps above and also check the following:

1. Check the Integrated Mast Split Bolt

Ensure the split bolt that secures the motor assembly to the mast is:

  • Fully installed
  • Tight
  • Secure

A loose split bolt can allow movement in the motor assembly and may cause vibration, increased noise or reduced performance.

2. Check for Motor Rotation on the Mast

After installing the motor onto the mast:

  1. Ensure the mast split bolt is installed correctly.
  2. Hold the mast securely.
  3. Check if there is any rotational movement of the stator, by holding the stator and turning it clockwise/anticlockwise.

The motor should not rotate once installed and secured.

If the Motor Rotates After Installation

If there is rotational movement after the split bolt has been correctly installed:

  • This may indicate a hardware issue
  • Contact the mast manufacturer for further assistance and to discuss potential fitment or hardware concerns.

Note: Foil Drive can assist with motor-related troubleshooting; however, fitment issues should be assessed by the mast manufacturer.

Still Having Issues?

If you have completed all troubleshooting steps and your motor is still vibrating, running poorly, or experiencing power loss, please submit a warranty claim.

Before submitting, confirm you have checked:

☐ Propeller blades move freely
☐ Propeller bolts are correctly tensioned
☐ Propeller blades are not damaged
☐ Motor is clean and free from debris
☐ Bearings are secure and undamaged
☐ Rotor shaft has no movement
