How to change cables on a V2 motorUpdated 14 hours ago

The Foil Drive V2 Motor uses a removable cable system, allowing you to quickly change motor cable lengths to suit different boards, riding styles, and conditions. This guide will walk you through a fast, safe cable swap to ensure a secure, watertight connection every time.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Inspect and Prepare Components

Before connecting anything:

  • Check the motor plug and cable connector for sand, salt, or debris
  • Ensure the red O-ring is installed on the cable plug
  • Lightly apply a thin layer of Foil Drive dielectric grease to the O-ring (do not apply directly into the pins). This helps maintain waterproofing and reduces wear over time.

2. Connect the Cable to the Motor

  • Align the pins carefully between the motor and cable connector
  • Push the cable in straight and evenly until it sits fully flush
  • Do not twist, force, or wiggle the connection

A clean, straight connection is critical to protecting the pins and ensuring reliability.

3. Install the Motor Puck

  • Slide the V2 Motor Puck over the connected cable and motor
  • Align the cut-out in the puck with the cable exit
  • Ensure the puck sits flat against the motor housing

4. Secure the Puck

  • Insert the M4 bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading
  • Tighten evenly using a 2.5mm Allen key - Do not use power tools
  •  Do not overtighten — firm and snug is sufficient

5. Final Checks

Before heading to the water, confirm:

  • Cable is flush against the electronics box and trailing edge of the mast
  • O-ring is in place and undamaged
  • Puck is securely fastened
  • Cable is not under tension or sharp bending
  • Stator and rotor are free from debris

Important Tips

  • Never pull on the cable itself to disconnect — remove straight and gently
  • Avoid sharp bends or tension once installed
  • Regularly inspect connectors after surf or travel use
  • Only use Foil Drive-approved grease on electrical connections
