V2 Propeller Guard: An Additional Layer of ProtectionUpdated a day ago
The Foil Drive V2 Propeller Guard is an optional safety accessory designed to provide an additional layer of protection around the motor and propeller.
While no propeller guard can eliminate all risk, the V2 Propeller Guard helps reduce the likelihood of direct contact with the spinning propeller during use.
Like all Foil Drive safety features, it is intended to complement safe riding practices—not replace them.
Please note: The V2 Propeller Guard is an optional accessory and is not included as standard with any Foil Drive system.
Why use a propeller guard?
Hydrofoiling is an exciting sport, but it also involves exposed components moving through the water at speed.
The V2 Propeller Guard surrounds the motor and propeller with a durable injection-moulded guard, providing an additional physical barrier that can help reduce the chance of accidental contact.
For many riders, this offers extra peace of mind while learning, riding with family, or introducing new people to the sport.
Does the propeller guard make Foil Drive completely safe?
No.
The V2 Propeller Guard helps reduce risk, but it does not eliminate all hazards associated with hydrofoiling.
Foiling remains an inherently high-risk water sport, and riders should always exercise caution, ride within their ability, and maintain awareness of their surroundings.
It's also important to remember that the propeller is only one part of the system.
Components including the:
- Mast
- Fuselage
- Front wing
- Rear wing
may also cause injury if they come into contact with a rider or another person.
A propeller guard should always be considered one part of a broader approach to safety, alongside appropriate protective equipment, safe locations and responsible riding practices.
Who is the propeller guard recommended for?
The V2 Propeller Guard is particularly well suited to:
- Riders learning to foil.
- Beginners building confidence.
- Children and younger riders.
- Recreational riders seeking additional protection.
- Schools, coaches and instructional environments.
Many experienced riders also choose to use a propeller guard when introducing friends or family to Foil Drive or when riding in situations where an extra layer of protection is desirable.
Are there any performance trade-offs?
Yes.
The V2 Propeller Guard is designed as a safety accessory, not a performance upgrade.
Adding the guard increases drag around the motor, which can:
- Reduce overall efficiency.
- Slightly decrease runtime.
- Affect acceleration.
- Change the ride feel, particularly during surf foiling.
These trade-offs are a normal consequence of adding additional protection around the propeller.
When is the propeller guard most effective?
The V2 Propeller Guard is generally best suited to e-foil applications, where the propeller remains consistently submerged throughout the ride.
In these conditions, riders typically notice less impact on performance while benefiting from the additional protection.
During surf foiling or wave riding, where the motor frequently enters and exits the water, the additional drag may be more noticeable.
Is the V2 propeller guard compatible with my motor?
The V2 Propeller Guard is compatible with all V2 motors (Standard and High Power), includin
g V2 integrated masts.
It is also compatible with all current Foil Drive propeller options, including LR6 propellers in the three-blade configuration.
V1 motors with a fixed cable are only compatible with the V1 Propeller Guard. Please reach out to [email protected] if you would like to purchase a V1 Propeller Guard.
Note: V1 Propeller guards are only compatible with the Standard (black) and MH10 (grey) propellers in the two-blade configuration.
Safety Beyond the Propeller Guard
The Propeller Guard should always be used alongside good riding habits.
Foil Drive recommends:
- Wearing a helmet.
- Wearing an impact vest or approved personal flotation device.
- Using a correctly fitted leg rope where appropriate.
- Learning in uncrowded locations.
- Riding within your ability.
- Following local surf etiquette and giving other water users plenty of space.
No single accessory can remove all risk, but combining good equipment with responsible riding significantly improves overall safety.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the V2 Propeller Guard included with my Foil Drive?
No. The V2 Propeller Guard is sold separately as an optional accessory.
Will the propeller guard stop all injuries?
No. It helps reduce the chance of contact with the propeller but cannot eliminate all risks associated with hydrofoiling.
Does the propeller guard affect performance?
Yes. The additional protection creates extra drag around the motor, which may reduce efficiency and slightly change the ride characteristics.
This effect is generally more noticeable during surf foiling than e-foiling.
Should experienced riders use a propeller guard?
That's a personal choice. While many experienced riders prefer riding without one for maximum efficiency, others choose to fit a propeller guard when teaching beginners, riding with children, or whenever they want an additional layer of protection.
Best Practice
The V2 Propeller Guard is designed to support safer riding—not replace good judgement.
Whether you're learning to foil, introducing someone new to the sport, or simply looking for extra peace of mind, the Propeller Guard provides an additional layer of protection while recognising that responsible riding, proper safety equipment and good etiquette remain the most important safety tools of all.
