Preparing Your Foil Drive for Storage (Seasonal or Long-Term)Updated 2 hours ago

Proper storage of your Foil Drive system is essential to maintain performance and reliability. Following the correct procedures helps prevent corrosion and unexpected issues when returning to the water.

This guide covers how to clean, dry, and store your Foil Drive unit safely during the off-season or any extended period of non-use.

System Disassembly

Before cleaning or storage, fully disassemble your setup:

  • Remove the Foil Drive unit from the board
  • Detach the mast from the electronics box
  • Separate all major components:
    • Rotor from Stator
    • Hub, propeller and bolts

This step is essential to allow full access for cleaning and to ensure all salt buildup can be properly removed.

Cleaning Your Foil Drive Unit

Before storing your system, it is important to remove salt, sand, and debris that can cause corrosion or premature wear.

1. Fresh Water Rinse

Rinse all components thoroughly with fresh water

  • Ensure the nose cone remains latched during rinsing
  • With the controller switched off:
    • Rinse the motor (stator and rotor) thoroughly
  • Rinse the mast, electronics box and board separately
  • Pay close attention to:
    • where the mast connects to the electronics box
    • any visible salt buildup or sand accumulation

2. Remove All Salt Build-Up

After rinsing:

  • Inspect all components for dried salt residue
  • Re-rinse any areas where salt is still visible

3. Drying and Light Protection

Once dry and free of salt:

  • Apply a light coating of lanolin-based rust preventer (or equivalent) to the rotor and stator
  • Inspect bearings for smooth operation and wear
  • Lightly lubricate stainless steel bearing located in the stator

Leave the rotor removed during storage.

General Storage Best Practices

To ensure your system remains in optimal condition:

  • Fully disassemble system before storage
  • Remove Foil Drive unit from board
  • Detach mast from electronics box
  • Remove all salt buildup
  • Store components separately (rotor, unit, mast, board)
  • Avoid stacking heavy items on your system and components
  • Keep equipment dry and ventilated
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from flammables and direct sunlight
  • Inspect components before and after storage periods

Summary

Proper storage comes down to four key principles:

  • Fully disassemble system
  • Clean thoroughly and remove all salt buildup
  • Store dry, cool, and ventilated
  • Keep battery at 40–60% charge

Following these steps will help ensure your Foil Drive system is ready to perform when you return to the water.

Returning to Use After Storage

Before your first session back:

  • Inspect all components for corrosion or damage (including bolts)
  • Check battery charge level (top up if required)
  • Ensure rotor and stator are clean and free of debris
  • Confirm all connectors are dry and properly greased
  • Reinstall components carefully before use
