Battery Caddy Overview and User GuideUpdated 15 days ago
The Foil Drive Battery Caddy is a convenient way to charge, discharge and store your Fusion Battery. It also provides a clear display of your battery's state of charge, charging status and estimated charging or discharge time.
While the Battery Caddy is designed primarily for the Fusion Battery, it can also be used to discharge compatible Gen2 batteries to their recommended storage level.
This article explains the Battery Caddy's main features and how to use it correctly.
Battery Caddy Overview
The Battery Caddy is a standalone accessory used for interacting with your battery out of the water. It is not required for riding and has no connection to your Foil Drive unit while in use.
Its primary functions include:
- Charging Fusion Batteries
- Storage charging
- Discharging a battery to storage level
- Displaying battery information
- USB power output for charging external devices
The Battery Caddy also provides a convenient handle, making it easier to transport and store your battery.
Installing the Battery
To install the battery:
- Ensure the battery label is facing the Foil Drive logo and display.
- Open both battery latches.
- Slide the battery fully into the caddy.
- Close both latches securely.
The battery can remain in the Battery Caddy when not in use.
Unlike leaving a battery installed in your Foil Drive unit, the Battery Caddy does not consume battery power while it is switched off.
Turning the Battery Caddy On
To power on the Battery Caddy:
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Release once the display turns on.
The Battery Caddy will briefly display 100% while it communicates with the battery's Battery Management System (BMS). Within a few seconds, the correct State of Charge (SoC) will be displayed.
If left idle, the Battery Caddy will automatically switch itself off to conserve power.
Charging Your Fusion Battery
The Battery Caddy works with the Fusion Charger to charge your battery.
To begin charging:
- Install the battery into the caddy.
- Connect the Fusion Charger.
- The charger and battery will communicate automatically.
- Charging begins once this handshake is complete.
During charging, the display shows:
- Battery percentage
- Charging power (Watts)
- Estimated time remaining
Charging is fastest between approximately 5% and 80% State of Charge before gradually slowing to balance the battery cells as it approaches full charge.
Tip: It's perfectly acceptable to unplug the battery before it reaches 100% if you're ready to head out for a session. The final few percent may take longer as the battery completes its balancing process.
Discharging to Storage Level
If you've fully charged your battery but your session is cancelled, the Battery Caddy can safely discharge the battery back to its ideal storage level.
To begin:
- Turn the Battery Caddy on.
- Select the Discharge function.
- Confirm the prompt to start.
The Battery Caddy will calculate the estimated discharge time before beginning.
Discharging occurs automatically and the Battery Caddy will switch itself off once the target storage level has been reached.
Getting the Best Discharge Performance
The Battery Caddy removes energy by converting it into heat through the rear heatsink.
For the best performance:
- Place the Battery Caddy on a hard surface.
- Ensure the rear heatsink has good airflow.
- Do not place it face-down on carpet, blankets or other soft surfaces.
Providing adequate airflow allows the Battery Caddy to discharge more efficiently.
USB Power Output
The Battery Caddy can also be used as a portable power bank.
Using the USB-A or USB-C ports, you can charge devices such as:
- Mobile phones
- Tablets
- Laptops
- V3 Controllers
- Other USB-powered devices
When charging an external device while discharging, the Battery Caddy uses both the internal discharge circuit and the USB output simultaneously, reducing the overall time taken to reach storage charge.
Using the Battery Caddy with Gen2 Batteries
The Battery Caddy can also discharge compatible Gen2 batteries to their recommended storage level.
Compatible batteries include:
- Max High Power
- Max Power
- Max Travel
When a Gen2 battery is installed, you'll be prompted to select the battery type. This allows the Battery Caddy to estimate discharge times more accurately.
Important: Gen2 batteries must always be charged using the appropriate Gen2 charger.
