The 43V Charger is designed specifically for charging Foil Drive 43V batteries. It automatically communicates with the battery before charging and adjusts its charging process as the battery approaches full capacity.

The charger can be used with or without the Fusion Battery Caddy. When the Caddy is connected, the charger communicates with the battery through the Caddy.

Compatibility

The 43V charger is designed specifically for:

  • Foil Drive 43V Gen2.5 batteries only.

It is not compatible with:

  • Gen2 batteries
  • Assist & Assist PLUS batteries
  • Any non–Foil Drive batteries

This is due to the built-in Battery Management System (BMS) handshake, which allows the charger and battery to communicate safely before charging begins.

Normal charging

1. Connect the charger to power

Connect the charger to a suitable 100–240V AC power supply.

The charger can draw approximately 650W, so the power supply must be capable of providing sufficient power.

A stable, surge-protected power source is recommended.

Do not use poor-quality power sources

Avoid charging from:

  • Cheap or low-quality DC-to-AC inverters
  • Non-pure-sine-wave inverters
  • Poor-quality generators that cannot maintain a stable output

An unstable or inadequate power supply can prevent the charger from operating correctly.

2. Check the charger status

When the charger is powered on without a battery connected, the LED will flash yellow, indicating Standby.

3. Connect the battery

Align the charger connector with the battery connector.

Make sure the connectors are correctly aligned before inserting the plug.

Do not force the connector in the wrong orientation. Incorrect connection can cause a short circuit and damage the charger.

Once connected, the charger and battery communicate with each other before charging begins.

The charger will then start charging and the fan may turn on.

4. Charging status

When the battery is charging, the charger LED will flash green.

The charger initially charges the battery quickly, then progressively reduces the charging rate as the battery approaches full capacity.

This is normal.

Why does charging slow down near 100%?

The battery charges quickly through the majority of its capacity. Once it reaches approximately 80%, the charger progressively reduces the charging current.

The final few percent can therefore take considerably longer than the first 80%.

If you are waiting for the battery to reach 100% and charging appears to have slowed significantly, the battery may already be at approximately 98–99%.

If you need to use the battery and do not require a completely full charge, you can check the battery's state of charge using the Battery Caddy or the V3 controller.

When is charging complete?

When charging is complete, the LED changes to solid green.

At this point, the battery has reached its full charge and can be disconnected from the charger.

The LED indicators provide information about the charger's current state.

The charger also has the LED information printed directly on its housing

Storage Charge Mode

The 43V Charger includes a built-in Storage Charge Mode.

Storage Charge is designed to bring the battery to approximately 60% charge, which is the recommended level for storing the battery between sessions.

How to activate Storage Charge

The charger has a button on the side:

  • Button out: Normal charging mode
  • Button pressed in: Storage Charge Mode

To storage charge your battery

  1. Finish using your battery.
  2. Allow the battery to cool if necessary.
  3. Press the charger button in to select Storage Charge Mode.
  4. Connect the charger to the battery.
  5. Allow the charger to complete the storage charge.
  6. Disconnect the battery and store it appropriately.

The charger will automatically stop charging when the battery reaches approximately 60%.

What if the battery is already above 60%?

If the battery is already above the storage-charge level, the charger will not discharge it.

Instead, it will indicate that no additional storage charging is required.

The LED may remain solid yellow.

This is normal.

Storage charging after every use

We recommend using Storage Charge Mode after every session.

After riding, simply select Storage Charge Mode and connect the battery to the charger. The charger will bring the battery back to approximately 60% and stop automatically.

This means your battery can be stored at an appropriate charge level and will be ready to charge fully before your next session.

Important: Do not change charging modes during a charge cycle

Avoid switching between Normal Charging and Storage Charge Mode while the battery is connected and charging.

If you need to change modes:

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Disconnect the charger from AC power.
  3. Wait at least 10 seconds for the charger to fully power down.
  4. Change the charging-mode button.
  5. Reconnect the charger to AC power.
  6. Wait for the charger to initialise.
  7. Reconnect the battery.

The charger needs to restart its communication process with the battery when changing modes.

Charger not charging?

If the battery is not fully charged but the charger does not appear to be charging, the charger may have entered a dormant or timed-out state.

Power cycle the charger

  1. Disconnect the charger from AC power.
  2. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the charger to AC power.
  4. Allow approximately 15 seconds for the charger to initialise and communicate with the battery.
  5. Reconnect the battery if necessary.

The charger should return to Standby and then begin charging once a compatible battery is detected.

Power cycling the charger is the first troubleshooting step if charging does not begin as expected.

Battery removed during charging

If you disconnect the battery while the charger is operating, the charger may temporarily display flashing red and green.

This indicates that the charger detected that the battery was removed during the charging process.

It does not necessarily indicate a fault with the battery or charger.

Power cycle the charger if necessary:

  • Disconnect AC power.
  • Wait at least 10 seconds.
  • Reconnect AC power.
  • Allow the charger to initialise.

Charger temperature and environment

The 43V Charger is IP66 rated and has a sealed aluminium housing, providing good protection against dust and water splashes.

However:

Do not submerge the charger or leave it exposed to rain.

For best performance:

  • Keep the charger in a cool, dry location.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not leave it on a hot dashboard.
  • Do not cover the charger while it is operating.
  • Keep the charger's ventilation area clear.
  • Allow the cooling fan to operate freely.

The charger can generate significant heat while charging. If it becomes excessively hot, it may activate thermal protection and stop operating.

Charging with the Battery Caddy

The Battery Caddy is not required for the charger to operate.

The 43V Charger communicates directly with the battery, whether the Caddy is connected or not.

The Caddy can, however, provide useful information about the battery's state of charge while charging.

Quick Reference

Normal charging

Button out → Connect AC power → Connect battery → Flashing green → Solid green when complete

Storage charging

Button in → Connect AC power → Connect battery → Flashing yellow → Solid yellow when storage charge is complete

If charging does not start

Disconnect AC power → Wait 10+ seconds → Reconnect AC power → Wait ~15 seconds → Reconnect battery

Important safety and care

  • Only use the 43V Charger with compatible Foil Drive 43V batteries.
  • Use a suitable, stable 100–240V AC power supply.
  • Never force the battery connector into the charger.
  • Keep connectors and threads free from debris.
  • Do not cover the charger while it is operating.
  • Keep the charger away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
  • Do not submerge the charger.
  • Use Storage Charge Mode when storing the battery between sessions.
